About Love...

I have these ideas about love. What it is, how I like it, and what I do to show it.

Before I get going, I’ll remind you that this is a blog…’nough said?

I have loved a lot of people, and there is a good chance if you are reading this that I love you; or you love me…maybe the feeling is mutual? This blabber-fest does not pertain strictly to “romantic love” mostly because I do not truly believe in it as a separate form…But I shall delve into that later.

Onward and Downward!

Go here, buy stuff.
A few photos to show you all where I found myself at 5 weeks from show day. I had a good pinch. I have been guided by great people and decide to pay for the lovely Dani Taylor from veganproteins.com to handle my meal plan for the final 6 weeks. Instead of spending my weekend determining what to eat and when I completely rely on someone else to use their knowhow and genius to help shed the layer of fat I’m trying to ditch!

The Important People

Most of the people we encounter come and go; friends, pen pals, some family, teammates, loves…the fact that all of these people do not remain constant does not make them any less important. Everyone we encounter helps shape how we develop and the choices we make in our everyday lives.

Raging

Oh Lord...

So, I struggled. 6 weeks of painful, self-inflicted mind games and loads of bullshit. My body was out of whack, my mind followed, and my focus seemed non-existent. I spent that time going through the motions. (Albeit important, load bearing, fat burning motions…but in a heartless and gutless manner, it seemed.)

Losing It

.
I've gotten lost a bit in the past 3 weeks. I am drowning in all of the commitments I have made to different people and organizations. I feel restless inside my living situation, and am generally overwhelmed.

I am sitting at work, just waiting for e-mails to roll in...so I'm using the time to write this shit for the world to read. For whatever reason, I think it might help.

Protein Pudding

I love protein shakes...BUT in an effort to get creative with my snacks I looked up different protein puddings and such. Many call for nut butters (teehee <--Not mature enough) and other ingredients...Too much fat, too many calories, and too much effort!!!!

Honesty

I was watching too much TV recently and made this note in my phone.

There is too much dramatic irony on TV. It teaches people to create it their own in lives.

Do right by yourself; be forthcoming with information and details. This does not mean say whatever is on your mind at all times, but rather present facts so that people have the ability to make decisions based on whole truths.

It will help.

Getting (Bike) Dressed

 I should be filing…but…

1.       It makes my back hurt, and

2.       It’s boring as hell

So I am going to write about how I get dressed to go biking in cold weather. It was super nice yesterday, which required only shorts and a jersey…but the weather for next week looks lame, so it might be back to the sleeves, pants, jacket, and gloves.

Prepare --> Succeed

Planning:

For years I have heard my mother say, “Prior planning prevents piss poor performance.” Usually in regard to doing homework, some sports related, or forgetting to bring a coat in the middle of winter. It is true; she was right and I use this as a mantra. I lead a relatively busy life, so planning, organization, and preparation are keys to my success.

PROGRESS

I said I would post my progress after my pinch today. So here it is. If you haven’t read my long winded version about what’s going on, check out the following two posts about BEING UGLY and FAT-->FIT.

Black and White

This has been bothering me lately…

People watch a movie or two…read an article, a blog post, or some other form of media and determine they should attempt being vegan.

Fat --> Fit : Trade that A for an I

Late 2012 I was asked if I had any interest in participating with a team of vegan athletes in a body building, figure and bikini competition. Since I was in high school cheerleading I had interest in competing in a fitness competition. I have since abandoned the desire to dance around like an idiot in some fucking weird costume, sneakers and fluffy crew socks…but I still want to build my body to a level unmatched at any time in my athletic career; in mid January I committed.

Gym Etiquette

I have been lifting weights for…since I was 16. (I’m getting older, so I don’t think I’m supposed to say how old I am anymore.) My high school weight room had a lot of rules. I still believe in them.

Being Ugly

I’m struggling. So many things are going so well in my life. I love everything. I have a new job, a new life, rad new side jobs, bikes, running, lifting, funtivities, sailing, the list goes on. I am working on new things all the time, projects, my fitness, my education, my professional experience…but there is one problem I have come across that I can’t seem to shake, that I have tried to solve, and have found no answer.

ACNE.

This Is How I Activate

Many folks who know me would have never guessed in a million years that I would be sitting here writing to you as a vegan. Not just “vegan” being someone who abstains from ingesting any foods made of animals or animal byproducts, but a full-fledged, non-leather buying, synthetic material wearing, cosmetic scrutinizing, compassion practicing, anti-speciesist,  human being. Hell, ask me the same question a year ago and I probably would have said the same thing.

I came across a quote last week:

You will recognize your own path when you come upon it, because you will suddenly have all the energy and imagination you will every need.

                                --Sara Teasdale

When I read that, everything I have been doing and developing was put in this perfect little word nugget, and I am excited that I found it. I learned something about myself in that instant.

I have been vegan for less than a year. I’ll tell you, it feels like longer…but then I listen to people tell me stories about 5 years ago…10 years ago…15 years ago…20 years ago…and I feel like less, like I haven’t done enough, like I will never do enough. There is some truth to all of that. I know I cannot devote all of my time to fighting for the rights of animals and the health of our planet.

In addition to being a member of mainstream America…I am not an anarchist, I do not go directly against the grain. I prefer to redirect people, give them new information and help them formulate new opinions. I feel very little can be accomplished by arguing, through violence, and other forms of disobedience. It is not in my nature to break rules; I’d rather change them.

So , how can I be an activist? I don’t know the answer to the question…but here is what I have going on right now…

In the name of my employer…The (vegan) Caterer…We are hosting a benefit for Green Acres Farm Sanctuary. This sanctuary has been around for 5 years, and just in the past year and a half became a qualified non-profit. The husband and wife team host dozens of rescued animals who live permanently, as well as fostering puppies and dogs from a nearby no-kill shelter. We are so excited to be able to help create awareness for this amazing organization which is doing all it can to save animals from needlessly being exploited and murdered.

In addition to benefiting a great organization the purpose of this benefit is to bring together as many people from the community as possible in support of a common goal. To listen to respected community member and business owner Tim Hitchins discuss the importance of building a strong foundation of businesses, organizations and individuals to drive the movement forward and into a positive light. So far we have tid-bits of information, but I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what the rest of the talk has in store.

As I have begun coordinating this benefit I have become overwhelmed by the community’s response. I have yet to be turned down by any business for product donations for our raffle. Every raffle prize will come from a vegan business from around the northwest! It is an amazing feeling to pour your heart and soul into something and have the response of people be exactly everything you ever hoped and imagined it could be.

As someone who can without a doubt still count my vegan and vegetarian friends on one hand it is an incredible experience. This benefit is like my sweet 16 of veganism…my coming out party…I’m here to help, support and give whatever I can so we can all work toward our common goal.

In all my success collecting prizes and support from local businesses, I hope that we are successful in recruiting individuals to join us for the event. The ticket holders, the people who want to support this amazing organization, and be a part of the foundation of the community. On paper it is a sure thing…but we need people to come celebrate the love in their own lives with a group of people who share interests and concerns for the welfare of the planet’s many creatures.

I personally invite you to attend our benefit this Valentine’s Day, February 14 at 7pm. Please bring dates, friends, acquaintances, and anyone who may be curious about veganism. It is a great opportunity to show non-subscribers all of the benefits of being a part of something so amazing; something that has changed my life in a very short time, and would no doubt contribute to their quality of life.

Meat Free Athlete

I just joined this website...MEAT FREE ATHLETE...I have scoped it a little. You can submit articles, recipes, meet people in a facebook-y way. I really like the idea. I need to surround myself with more conscious people, and I think this may be a great way to get started.

Check out the site, know that it isn't exclusively for vegetable eaters, and think about becoming a more compassionate human.

Enjoy your day.

Holly-Daze

I’m not feeling it. I have spent my entire life loving and enjoying the Fall through the New Year, celebrating with family, friends and co-workers. I’ve been the one who decorated my folks’ house (inside and out), helped cook food, organize parties…etcetera, etcetera…This year though…I just don’t feel like it. I long for summer, a ridiculous number of activities, and good outdoor fun. Oh well. It ain’t summer…

Some people just cope...Hahaha
There are so many different Holidays this time of year. No matter your religious, cultural, or family background there is a good chance you spend much of December celebrating something, even if you are the epitome of a lone wolf…you probably have some work related party or at least some tradition of being the most rad, cool, lonesome human being during a season of gathering.

I love to bake and give away sweets...
Traditions. That is what this time centers around. Perhaps everything you do, you do because that is what you have always done. Mindlessly buying expensive gifts for friends and family, making treats, going to a church you haven’t been to for 364 days. Whatever it is, whatever your reasons…I urge you to stop and think about why you do what you do.

I had a discussion with some folks and have read many posts about people abandoning Thanksgiving and rebelling against Christmas because of what the 2 represent. Typically we are smashed in the face with images of greed and gluttony. From where I stand, I have determined that holidays are only what you make them. If you disagree with the mainstream idea of what these days represent, then it is your responsibility to turn them into what that day/time/season means to you. Same goes for your everyday life.

Reject the negative and let this be an opportunity to make positive contributions to your community. I spent the last however many years helping my mom prepare and create the Christmas she wanted because it made her and the people around me happy. I gave them what they wanted, what they expected, because seeing a group of people I love the most in this world enjoying the work I had done is what I wanted.

Someone I love...Very much.
I still want to see them happy, but similarly, I want them to want the same for me. Exercising not only holiday traditions, but the manner by which I treat people year round has exhausted me. I give my love and time the way Americans spend money, with reckless abandon. I only have so much to give, I don’t have love and time like a credit card, my tank is empty and I fear the engine is about to cut out. I need love, and I don’t know where to find it.

Maybe the perception is that I have changed. I prefer to view it as evolving. For this reason, and those listed above, I will spend this season giving only what I am able. Traditions have to start somewhere.

I love giving gifts. It doesn’t matter the time of year, or if it is someone’s birthday, if I see something I think a person would enjoy, I like to get it for them. I don’t always just happen upon items, by listening to what people say about what they want, and what things are important to them, I often scour the internet researching how to get my hands on some priceless or seemingly irreplaceable items. I have a very hard time giving gifts that mean nothing…such a hard time that I don’t do it.

My mother had six children. Her holiday seasons have always been hectic. I have always helped prepare, execute and clean up the “doin’s.” This year I volunteered to host the dinner Christmas Eve. I have heard many complaints about what I would prepare from those who never contribute. I decided that they do not have a say. It was only at this point that they offered to prepare “food” of their choosing; they do not understand that would defeat the purpose. I want to have a Compassionate Christmas.
The Fire Place...5 siblings, 2 significant others, 5 nieces/nephews, and parents...

I have yet to decide about decorations…I have a fair amount. I will admit I love lights. LOVE LIGHTS…despite my disinterest in this season as a whole, I, like most living breathing things, am attracted to bright, shiny, flashing, colorful displays. So we’ll see how far I get with that, and trees and what have you…trees do smelllllll soooooo gooooooood.
I’m not trying to be a party pooper…What I have wanted in the past is not what I want right now. I am making an attempt to do what I think is right, for me and for my community. This difference feels weird, and I am experiencing some guilt as a result, I don’t know how to remedy it. Some people want to “Keep Christ in Christmas,” others just want 60” TVs; I want Compassion and support, maybe I should write Santa…

Random Sexist Thought

I am have never been like..."Pishawwww, Men are so stupid...They're all like...Yay sports! And MAN STUFF!!!" I do that more to women, because I think women tend to use their gender as an excuse...Whatever, here is my RANDOM SEXIST THOUGHT:

For me, thinking is the same as a stereotypical man going to fix a tiny issue. A problem as simple as tightening a screw turns into a 3 day project complete with the minimum 4 trips to the hardware store.

Never stops. FUUUUUUCK.

Missed Opportunities

Living life without regrets is not an easy thing to do. You can beat the “what if”s to death, and tick off your “coulda, shoulda, woulda”s but in the present you have only what you have. It is easier to fall into this behavior when you find yourself dissatisfied with your current situation. I find it is similarly good to reflect on bad times in the midst of celebrating victories. The places you have been make you who you are today; for better or for worse.

Professional Opportunities:

In late 2010 I was living in Chicago, in a shitty relationship and looking into returning to the Pacific NW. I interviewed for and was offered a position on the spot that would provide me the chance to move back to my “homeland.” After much weighing of pros and cons I decided to stay in Chicago. Shortly following my decision I received a huge bonus and a sizeable raise. Timing is so important; I cannot emphasize this point enough.

As I lived my life in the Midwest I continued to experience unrest. I started applying and working to find my way back to Portland. I found many interesting opportunities and was offered one at a large company. A huge company is not a type of place I had ever worked, but I was convinced the change of pace would be valuable experience. I have found that it was somewhat valuable…It taught me more lessons about what things to avoid and the types of people that I do not work well with than about anything accounting or business related.

After 8 or so months in the position I felt wholly restless. I was not learning at a pace that satisfies my need for knowledge, this all in conjunction with being told that my job was being shipped to a shared service center…AKA OUTSOURCED! Excellent; already dissatisfied with my situation, the atmosphere changes completely.
Ahhh, Rhodesian....
I dabbled in applications, resume updates, and cover letter composition. My saving grace came in the form of recruiters. I had 3 highly motivated, well trained, and generally amazing people working on my behalf. It is their job to provide their clients with qualified, motivated, well prepared candidates; that’s how these joints make their ca$h. Being a valuable candidate is the best weapon. (I’d like to think I would be something sharp…or a Rhodesian fighting stick…perhaps…)

Best. Recruiters. Ever.
In the end…that’s today…I got a job offer and I get to move on from my current situation. The curious part is the new job is on the same property as the position I turned down in late 2010. Coincidences are amazing. I could have taken the position in 2010, but missed out on so many other things. That one decision could have changed so many things about my current daily life; now I see, professionally, I will end up right where I believe I should be without disturbing what comprises the other parts of my life. If you spend every day dreading work, wishing you were anywhere else, you need to make a change.

Personal Relationships

Looking back at the people I considered to be my best friends over the years and comparing them to those I spend the most time with currently, very few of the original remain. That is what happens when you grow up and figure things out for yourself. Although you still have things in common with those people, we develop into more dynamic characters and require variety.

Transitioning from college life to “the rest” of your life, the varying speeds at which people change is amazing. Some of my best friends got married right after school, some are in long term committed relationships spanning 6-7 years, others have had kids, and many are still in transition. We are all familiar with the, “you’ve changed bro” mentality. Of course these people changed. They don’t live in dorms and shitty apartments anymore; they have jobs, and wives, children and pets to take care of. That is their life, the path they chose, it is, most importantly, what makes them happy.
5 Years. Reuniting.

There will always be chances to reunite and relive the glory days. Everyone loves to reminisce.

Romantic relationships…if I had made different choices in my last year of college I might be married and surrounded by a gaggle ‘o’kids. If I had made different choices and never moved to Chicago I have no idea where I would be…If I had stayed longer in Chicago…Who knows?

Table for One
I had been in relationships almost non-stop from the time I was 16 until 25… Currently this area of my life has undoubtedly fallen by the wayside. I have amazing friends and family, tons of activities and work…I dated a few people; these experiences pretty much confirmed the idea that I will spend the rest of my life being the “cool, single aunt,” because if what I experienced is an accurate representation of what the male population has to offer as mates, I’d rather be a spinster.

As far as personally-relatable opportunities I did not take advantage of (pun intended) I’m not sure how many exist. (Probably zero.) I have moved beyond the idea of fantastic fairytale love; it is out there, but it is not everlasting. I’ve felt it fade, I’ve seen the aftermath, its like a crash diet. Very few people are exposed to positive and realistic examples of true companionship; television, movies, divorced parents, excessive promiscuity…The images and ideas we are presented with concerning this area of our life are fucked. Maybe one day I’ll be lucky enough to find a person to share a tax return with, but not if it means unwillingly sacrificing parts of myself.

Funtivities

Racing My Bike
Pretty much anything you wouldn’t put on your resume goes in this area. Beyond work, family and friends these are the activities which make you a well rounded and interesting individual. Like finding out that scrawny guy from your work is a mixed martial artist and competes in cage fights.

Concerts
There is no reason to miss out on everything you want to do. The personal relationships you participate in should positively contribute to this area of your life.  Do not think work is a good reason to miss out on valuable non-work related, non-revenue generating activities. I’ve recently discovered the idea of the “Triple Bottom Line.” This idea takes into account more than money. (People, Profit, Planet) If more humans included it in their decision making process, our quality of life would be astronomically better.

Racing Boats
Having money is not the same as having happiness. I just accepted a job that came with a title downgrade and a pay cut; does it seem like I give a fuck? Hell NO! This opportunity is going to afford me time to do other things, work in a relaxed environment, and achieve goals beyond the cubicle walls. It is important at the end of each day for me to look back and know that I did not waste any time. Each thing I do should generate some sort of revenue, whether it have ca$h or intrinsic value. Commit to your life beyond ca$h.
